The Sound of Music at Hobby Center in Houston

For The Sound of Music, park at 1112 Clay Garage at 1112 Clay St, Houston, TX 77002. It’s a covered, 24/7 garage about 0.7 miles from the Hobby Center, which is about a 12 to 14 minute walk. Rates top out at $10 for 24 hours, compared with $20 at the Hobby Center garage. Try to arrive about an hour before the show so you have plenty of time to park and walk over.

You bought your tickets weeks ago, so now there’s just one thing left to figure out. Where are you going to park? Every performance of The Sound of Music brings a full house into the same few blocks around Bagby, Walker, and Rusk, and the theater’s garage can fill up quickly.

Luckily, you don’t have to park right next to the theater. Park a few blocks south, take a short walk to the Hobby Center, and give yourself enough time to get to your seat without rushing. When the show ends, you can also head back to your car using streets that may be less crowded than those closest to the theater.

Below, you’ll find the full 2026 show schedule, when to arrive for each performance, driving and walking directions, and answers to the most common parking questions.

Saturday and Sunday both have two shows. On Saturday, only about two and a half hours separate the end of the matinee from the 7:30 pm curtain, so the streets around the theater stay busy from early afternoon into the night. Sunday's evening show starts at 7:00 pm, a half hour earlier than the rest of the week, so don't use a weeknight park-by time that day.

Why Theater District traffic backs up before every show

The Hobby Center sits right in the middle of Houston’s Theater District, so everyone heading to The Sound of Music is arriving in the same area at around the same time. That means traffic can quickly build up around the garage entrance at Rusk and Walker.

The Hobby Center recommends arriving 45 minutes early because traffic and construction can cause delays. Its parking page also warns that on-site parking is subject to availability and can fill up before performances.

Three things stack up on show nights:

  • Weekday commuter traffic. Tuesday through Friday 7:30 pm curtains mean you're driving in while downtown offices are still emptying out.

  • One entry point for thousands of cars. The attached garage and the valet line at Rusk and Bagby both feed off the streets right in front of the building.

  • The exit crush. When the final bows end around 10:30 pm, the whole audience leaves at once. Getting out of the attached garage is often slower than getting in.

A few blocks of distance fixes most of this.

Tips for The Sound of Music parking in Houston, TX

A little planning turns show night into the easy part of your evening.

Reserve before you leave home. Booking your spot on SpotHero ahead of time means you pull in, park, and start walking. No circling.

Check Houston TranStar before you drive. The Hobby Center points guests to houstontranstar.org for live traffic and incident updates, and it's worth a 30 second look before you get on I-45.

Eat downtown and leave the car where it is. With a 24-hour maximum of $10, you can park at 1112 Clay in the afternoon, grab dinner, walk to the Hobby Center, and walk back after the show without paying more.

Don't underestimate the matinees. For the Saturday 2:00 pm and Sunday 1:30 pm matinees, streets are quieter than on weeknights. You still want to arrive early, because matinee audiences tend to come in big family groups that take longer to get seated.

Know your exit. After the show, walk back the way you came and leave via Clay or Bell Street. You'll be heading toward the freeway while most of the audience is still waiting to get out of the attached garage.
